Glenn Smith Aerial Advertising are licensed to perform the two types of aerial advertising as follows:

Glenn Smith started business along with Roger Norris in 1980 with banner towing being their first form of aerial advertising which started operations in 1981 in a Piper Pawnee. The Piper was replaced in 1984 with a Cessna 185 (C185) 300hp tail-dragger VH-RKZ that is still being used to date.

Roger Norris remained a partner until 1984 at which point Glenn Smith bought out his share of the business. Employees of Glenn Smith Aerial Advertising are:

  • Ron Smith - Chief Pilot (since 1981)
  • Glenn Collins - Commercial Pilot
  • Scott Moore - Operational staff
  • Alan Kirkpatrick - Operational staff

The individual letters used to make up a banner were hand made by Glenn Smith and have stood the test of time with only minor repairs done to them over the years and they are still being used today. The square-edged block letters, 2 metres high, uppercase are red in colour. A maximum of 26 letters may be used in any one message excluding spaces.

Banner Towing has certain advantages over Skywriting, these are:

  • May be carried out when conditions are unfavourable for Skywriting
  • May be carried out during daylight hours all year round
  • Is done closer to the ground (viewers) around 500 - 1000 feet above sea-level
