About The Display

The Display is 4½ to 6 minutes of hi-energy, action packed aerobatics. It is crowd pleasing visually as well as sounding great. Alan has found that the general public likes to see a biplane doing aerobatics rather than a monoplane because it has that vintage Red Baron look.

The display operates in a small portion of the sky so the crowd can see and hear what is happening the whole time. Alan gives a commentary from the cockpit so he can explain what is happening to the crowd throughout the whole flight The height for the display is 3500ft to 500ft.

The upper limit is only reached at the top of some vertical lines and at the start of the initial dive. The G force reached is +6 and -3 G during the flight with speeds of up to +170kts and -30kts. The display is made up of some classic (Aresti) competition manoeuvres, snap rolls, hesitation rolls, Avalanches, Slow rolls, Stall turns, Vertical rolls, outside loops as well as freestyle type aerobatics, multiple snap rolls 4+, vertical snap rolls, torque rolls, knife edge flight, tail slides, and spinning manoeuvres with some of his own manoeuvres like the hesitation stall turn.

Alan puts his youth and enthusiasm, as well has heart-stopping precision, into every display.
"I fly every display with the same accuracy as if I were at a competition… I don't believe that the audience should get any less".

Alan Kilpatrick History

Alan started flying when he was 11 years old in ultralight aircraft. At the age of 15 he got his student pilot licence and went solo on 20 March 1998 shortly after turning 16. He also received his restricted pilots licence in 1998.

Alan started Aerobatic training in June 1998 with Action Aerobatics and received his basic aerobatics rating in 1998. At the start of 1999 he received his low-level aerobatics rating to 1500ft. April 1999 was his first aerobatic comp, which was the Australian Aerobatics Championships. He was able to win the basic division at this comp despite flying an aircraft that he had never flown before as the Pitts S2-A was not able to make it to the comp due to weather.

Alan then moved up to sportsman category to compete at the N.S.W titles, which were held in October 1999. Alan placed second at this comp by just 4 points out of 1200. They were only able to fly one round at this comp due to bad weather.

I n November 1999 Alan won the student of the year at the Royal Newcastle Aero Club.

I n the year 2000 Alan received his Private Pilots Licence so he did not fly the National Aerobatic Championships for financial reasons.

At the start of 2000 Alan began flying a Cessna 185 for the Newcastle Sport Parachute Club. This was a great help in getting his hours up and staying super current. To date Alan has more than 300 hrs in Cessna 185.

2001 saw Alan move up to intermediate aerobatics competition and start flying the single seat Pitts Special, and receive a 1000ft Aerobatic rating. In April 2001 he won the intermediate in the Australian Aerobatic Championships. At this competition he also won the Highest Percentage Score overall.

Late 2001 Alan received his 500ft Aerobatic rating and started to train for advanced, which required a lot of time, effort and dedication. Alan was coached by Glenn Collins and sponsored by Glenn Smith Aerial Advertising.

I n 2002 Alan competed in Advanced at the National Aerobatic Championships. He was able to win. This was a great win as Advanced was the highest category flown at the Australian Aerobatic Championships. In October 2002 Alan won the Advanced State Aerobatics Championships. [see results]

Since returning from the competition Alan has started to move into Airdisplay and Airshow flying as well as continuing on with competition.

Alan has also started his own business, 3D Aviation, selling Aviation supplies including hand held GPS, ELT, Headsets and so on.

To date Alan has over 650 hrs Total Time, with 500+ hrs on tail wheel aircraft and 150hrs Aerobatics as well as having over 20 different types of aircraft in his logbook.
